You need software that runs the laser

Reticle Red never touches your machine. It does not stream jobs, drive motion, frame a workpiece, focus a lens, align with a camera or hold your material library.

Use instead: LightBurn for CO2, diode and most galvo setups; EZCAD2 or EZCAD3 for fiber and MOPA galvo markers; xTool Creative Space, LightBurn or the vendor software that shipped with your machine.

You need an offline desktop application

Everything runs in the browser against a server. A shop with no network, an air-gapped machine room or a workflow that has to keep working when the internet drops is not served by this.

Use instead: A desktop package — LightBurn, Inkscape, Affinity Designer or Illustrator — installed on the machine that needs to keep working offline.

You need CAD, CAM or parametric modelling

There is no constraint solver, no assembly modelling, no toolpath strategy engine and no dimensioned drawing workflow. Box Maker and the coin and map generators are parameterised generators, not a CAD package.

Use instead: Fusion 360, FreeCAD, Onshape or SolidWorks for modelling; their CAM workspaces or your machine’s own CAM for toolpaths.

You want a library of finished designs to buy and burn

This is a generator, not a marketplace. The free files under /laser-ready are starting geometry and test grids, not a catalogue of ready-to-sell products, and Style DNA supplies pattern styles rather than finished artwork.

Use instead: A design marketplace — Etsy, Design Bundles, Creative Fabrica — or a vendor’s own project library.

You want guaranteed machine settings for your material

The Parameters Library publishes baselines with their source, machine and wattage, and marks what has been independently corroborated. It is a starting point for a test grid. No published number is a guarantee for your lens, your material batch or your machine’s condition, and the site will not pretend otherwise.

Use instead: Run the material test grid the Laser Lab builds for you, then record what actually worked on your machine — that record is worth more than any published table.

You want a general-purpose photo or vector editor

Image Lab prepares photos for engraving — contrast, dithering, tracing, background removal, upscaling. It is not a layer-based editor and it will not replace a drawing program for general artwork.

Use instead: Photoshop, Affinity Photo or GIMP for raster work; Illustrator, Affinity Designer or Inkscape for drawing vectors.

Does Reticle Red control my laser?

No. It prepares artwork and exports a file. You still run the job in LightBurn, EZCAD, XCS or whatever software came with your machine. That split is deliberate — the design layer and the machine layer are different problems.

Can I use it without an internet connection?

No. It runs in the browser against a server, and the AI operations are server-side. If your shop needs a workflow that survives a dropped connection, install a desktop package for that part of the job.

Will the published laser settings work on my machine?

Treat them as a starting point, never a guarantee. Each record names its source, machine and wattage, and the library marks which entries have independent corroboration. Build the test grid, run it on scrap from the same batch, and keep your own result — your machine’s condition, lens and material batch all move the answer.

Do I own what the AI tools generate, and can I sell it?

Is Reticle Red a red dot sight or a rifle optic?

No. Reticle Red is browser-based laser engraving design software, operated from Wisconsin, United States. The name collides with firearms optics vocabulary, but the product is design software for laser engravers and has no connection to optics, sights or firearms components.
