Does the Outline Studio cost credits?
Building an outline is free and unlimited, signed in or not. Sheet detection, perspective correction, thresholding and hole carving all run on a canvas in your own browser, so there is no model call and nothing to meter. One optional action is paid: if a photo is too busy to separate — a part on a cluttered bench, or a shadow welded to the silhouette — an AI isolate will find the object for 1 credit. You are told when it would help, and never charged without confirming.
Does my photo get uploaded?
Not for the free outline. The whole separation happens on a canvas inside your browser, so the picture never leaves your device. The only exception is the optional AI isolate: that one runs on our servers, so it does upload the photo, and it asks you to confirm the credit first.
How does it know how big my part is?
From the reference rectangle. Lay the part on a plain sheet of US Letter or A4, shoot straight down, and the sheet’s known dimensions set the scale. The outline reports the part’s true width and height and carries that scale into The Fabricator.
Why does it want the part on a sheet of paper?
One sheet solves three problems at once: a plain light background for the silhouette, a known rectangle to correct the camera angle, and true dimensions for scale. Every shop already has one.
Will holes and cutouts stay open?
Yes. Enclosed regions are classified by contour parity, so a trigger guard, magazine port or screw hole is carved as a real opening rather than filled — which is what stops an engraving running across a hole.
Can I photograph a tall part at an angle?
Corner correction rectifies a plane, so a steep shot of a tall part also shows its side walls and no maths removes those from the silhouette. Shoot straight down and the outline is a true top-down profile.
