Fractal & Flow Engraving Styles

Fractal and Flow is the shelf for patterns that depict no object at all. Every style here is made by a process instead: lines that branch, curl, nest or drift until they cover the piece. Tangle Pattern divides the field into sections and fills each one with a different orderly repeating tangle, and Topographic Relief draws smooth nested contour lines that tighten on the steep slopes of an imaginary terrain. These all-over, non-representational looks suit knife scales, pen barrels, grips, EDC gear, boards and tabletops, where a modern pattern should read as texture rather than as a picture. Because there is no subject to keep complete, they wrap around cylinders and fill awkward outlines gracefully. Small tangle cells and hairline contours are the detail to check in the generated preview before you commit a finished piece.

Using the Fractal & Flow styles

Open the Fabricator, load the outline of the part you are engraving, and choose a style from this family. The pattern is generated to fill your outline rather than pasted over it, so the result fits the part instead of being cropped to it. Run a test on matching scrap before committing a production piece — density that reads perfectly on coated metal can close up on open-grain wood, and the fix is usually speed or an extra pass rather than more power.
