1. Load and frame the real part photograph
Open The Fabricator, choose the photo workflow, and load a clear, square-on photograph of the part. Zoom until the usable engraving surface fills the canvas while every edge, screw hole, and protected feature remains visible. This framing decision sets the working resolution for every later step, so inspect the image at full size before continuing and replace a blurred or heavily angled photo rather than trying to repair uncertain geometry later.
2. Trace a precise protected mask
Select the Pen Tool and place nodes around the exact area that may receive artwork. Follow the physical boundary instead of the shadow around it, keep holes and controls outside the painted region, and close the path only after checking each corner. Commit the path, then use padding to pull generated detail safely away from edges. The mask is the production contract: pixels outside it remain protected while the selected engine fills only the approved zone.
3. Choose Style DNA and generate the artwork
Pick the Style DNA that matches the material and desired line weight, then set pattern scale for the real dimensions of the part. Fine ornamental detail that looks strong on coated metal can close up on open-grain wood, so choose density for the burn process rather than for the screen alone. Fire the selected engine once, review the result against the mask, and reject any output that crowds a boundary or obscures a functional opening.
4. Inspect, assemble, and export the burn-ready file
Use the engraving preview to check contrast and boundary clearance, then switch to the art-only view to inspect the generated layer without the photograph. Confirm that the finished artwork aligns with the original part and that every protected feature remains open. Export SVG when you want editable vector paths or PNG for a prepared raster workflow, import the file into LightBurn or EZCAD at the measured part size, and run a small test on matching scrap before the production burn.
Validate the workflow on your machine
Treat the finished file as a controlled starting point, not a universal machine recipe. Confirm the artwork dimensions after import, verify focus and lens selection, and run a small test on scrap from the same material batch before committing the production piece. Change one variable at a time when tuning speed, power, frequency, line interval, or pass count. Record the machine, source wattage, lens, material finish, focus method, and final settings with the saved job. That short production note makes the result repeatable for the next operator and prevents a strong screen preview from being mistaken for a proven burn.
